CIT--

Youngsters who are thirteen years old and interested in learning how to work with children may apply for our three year Counselor in Training Program. Work experience, training, personal growth, skills acquisitions, and fun are stressed in two sessions during the first four or the last four weeks of the camp season. Many paid counselors are hired from the ranks of former CITs.

Who?-

Our program is designed for teens who are interested in working with young children and in developing leadership skills. Although many of our CITs are former campers who are interested in continuing their camping experience, this is not a requirement. First Year CITs must have celebrated their thirteenth birthday before camp begins.

When?-

There are two four week long CIT sessions each summer. They run concurrently with the first two and last two sessions of the Day Camp. We believe that a minimum of four weeks are necessary in order for the CIT to take full advantage of what our program has to offer. There is a required orientation program for CITs the Saturday preceding the first day of camp.

Where?-

Our CITs take full advantage of all of the facilities and equipment of the Brooks School Day Camp. They are actively involved in all daily activities and camp events. In addition CITs meet both individually and as a group with the CIT Coordinator for workshops, planning, and training sessions.

How?-

The CIT program is a carefully supervised, work-oriented experience, which gives young people the opportunity to work under qualified counselors to begin to learn and understand the demands and responsibility of a counselor's job. Under the careful supervision of the CIT Coordinator, CITs have the opportunity to participate in a different activity, or assist with a different group each week. CITs work together with the CIT coordinator in planning his/her activity schedule. CIT interests and strengths are taken into consideration when making activity and group assignments.

  • In addition, CITs have a well structured and supervised series of training workshops where they will have the opportunity to learn more about the different aspects of being a camp counselor and working with children. These workshops are conducted by camp administrators, activity directors, and experienced group counselors as well as guest speakers.
  • All CIT will be encouraged to pick an activity, and when possible two, in which they would like to specialize. While assigned to these activities, the CIT will begin to gain the knowledge and basic instruction skill needed to become competent to lead a group of campers in the activity.
  • All Counselors-in-Training are seen as leaders in the camp and role models for the campers. The highest standards of conduct, attitude and morality are both expected and demanded both while working with campers and during free time.

2nd and 3rd Year CITs

  • CITs who do well during their first year will be invited back as 2nd Year CITs. The second year increases the diversity of work experience in many camp settings. Leadership, child supervision, and individual and small group instruction in a variety of different camp activities is stressed. Qualified Second Year CITs are invited to become Third Year CITs.
  • Third Year CITs are the backbone of our program. Not only do we rely on them for their leadership amongst the other CITs, but they are given both responsibility and privileges commensurate with their experience and achievement. Many of our Third Year CITs will go on to be considered for positions at the Brooks School Day Camp.
We are very proud of our Counselor-in-Training Program and excited about the upcoming summer season. We are able to offer interested young people with a beautiful environment, a variety of positive experiences supervised by competent professionals, and a first rate introduction to the world of camp counseling.
