Family-Friendly Outdoor Fall Activities

Fall is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors—the fresh air without the humidity and heat, the beautiful autumn leaves, and the seasonal activities, plants, and food make it arguably the best time of year.

There are plenty of proven benefits of getting outside with your kids—like improving physical and mental health, reducing stress, and building confidence, to name a few.

Most people associate outdoor activities with summer, but autumn is an ideal time to get the whole family outside for active and creative fun. Trying to find more autumn activities? Check out these fall activities perfect for families:

1. Apple Picking

A classic outdoor fall activity, apple picking gets the whole family outside and walking around for an engaging and rewarding activity. Once you have your apples picked, you can head home and bake a sweet treat together.

2. Playing in a Pile of Leaves

Okay, maybe it’s a cliche—but for good reason. What better way to (perhaps sneakily) persuade the family to help with outdoor chores—like raking the leaves and cleaning up the lawn—than to watch the pure joy that comes from jumping in a big pile of colorful leaves? Hey, you might even want to join the kids! Though simple, these are memories that will last forever.

3. Themed Parties

Why not? The Halloween season calls for fun themes and dressing up. Even if you don’t want to throw a big party, invite a few friends over for any excuse to play around with different themes—whether it’s an ice cream social or a cookout.

4. Visiting a Pumpkin Patch

Head to your nearest pumpkin patch to spend the day enjoying outdoor activities, like hay rides, corn mazes, farmer’s markets, and petting zoos. The cherry on top? You and the family can decorate your pumpkins later, or cook up something seasonal and delicious together.

5. Decorating Pumpkins

Whether you’re in the mood to carve or paint, decorating pumpkins is such a fun and creative activity for the whole family. Doing it outdoors makes it even better to enjoy the fresh air and to worry less about the mess. Even if you don’t have pumpkins, any form of arts and crafts are a perfect excuse to get outdoors and get creative.

6. Sports and Games

The cooler autumn weather makes doing more physical activities like soccer, archery, or tennis more enjoyable than playing in the summer heat.
