Brooks School Summer Programs offers American Red Cross (ARC) Learn to Swim Courses on Saturday mornings during the summer of 2018. Preschool Aquatics through ARC Level 4 are offered.

Classes are thirty minutes long and run between 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM from July 7 through August 11. You will choose your lesson time on the registration form. To learn more about the different swim levels, please review the American Red Cross Level fact sheets.

Water Safety Instructor Course

The purpose of this program is to train instructor candidates how to teach a variety of water safety courses. This includes the Basic Water Rescue, Personal Water Safety, and Learn to Swim Courses. This course also includes the Fundamentals of Instructor Training, which is a prerequisite for all American Red Cross Instructors.

Blended Learning Lifeguard Certification

The purpose of this American Red Cross certification class will prepare students to become certified lifeguards. Registered participants will be sent a link prior to the start of class to complete the required online coursework. Students will be expected to have completed the online course work before class begins.

Prerequisites: Must be 15 years of age by the end of the course. Participants must attend all sessions and pass a prerequisite swim test:

  1. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. the face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Lifeguard Recertification

The purpose of this program is to review the Lifeguard Training course material and practical skills in the classroom as well as practice in the pool before the final exams. Students must be currently certified to take a review course. If your certification has expired, you must take the full Lifeguard Training course. Participants must attend all class sessions and bring their own pocket mask. Pocket masks can be ordered if needed on the registration form.

Prerequisites: Lifeguards must have a current Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Certification. Must show proof of certifications. Participants must pass the prerequisite swim test.
