What to Prepare for the First Day of Day Camp

There’s nothing quite like the first day of summer camp—new friends, new adventures, and memories waiting to be made. Whether your child is enrolled in our traditional day camp (recognized as one of the best in New England) for the first time or returning for another exciting summer, a little preparation goes a long way in making day one feel smooth and special.

At Brooks School Summer Programs, we’re here to help you prepare for day camp with this easy, thoughtful guide for parents and campers alike.

Day Camp Essentials to Pack

Let’s start with the basics. Here’s what your camper should bring along each day to stay comfortable, safe, and ready for fun:

  • Backpack: A sturdy, easy-to-carry backpack to hold all their belongings

  • Refillable water bottle: Staying hydrated is key—especially during active outdoor play

  • Sunscreen: Apply before drop-off and pack extra for reapplication

  • Hat and sunglasses: To keep cool and protected from the sun

  • Swimsuit and towel: Daily swim lessons and free swim are a highlight at our Massachusetts day camp, so make sure they’re ready

  • Change of clothes: Just in case they get wet or messy during activities

  • Comfortable shoes: Sneakers are best—open-toe shoes or flip-flops can be tricky on active days

Don’t Forget These “Extras”

While the gear matters, so does your camper’s mindset! Here are a few non-tangible things we recommend they bring:

  • A sense of curiosity: Camp is a place to try new things—encourage your child to keep an open mind and explore something unfamiliar

  • Excitement to make friends: Our programs are built around connection, community, and kindness

  • Confidence to be themselves: Brooks is a welcoming, inclusive space where every camper can thrive as they are

Label Everything (Really!)

With so many campers and daily transitions, it’s easy for towels, water bottles, and t-shirts to get misplaced. Label everything clearly so your child can keep track of their gear—and avoid the lost & found!
